About Ind 6:

US 6 was platted along the logical logical place in the Indiana numbering system. It wasn't the best of roads throughout its routing, however: between Ligonier and Westville the original road was barely dirt. Also, the portion between Westville and Munster was built up after it was signed as US 6.

About US 6:

In 1932 US 6 was expanded from its short routing in the East to Colorado, and its routing over Indiana 6 was likely intentional and logical.

The portion between Ligonier and Westville was built up during much of the thirties. Before this portion was finished, US 6 was routed over the Lincoln Highway for most of its path, serving Goshen, Elkhart and South Bend and going returning to its intended line at Westville. This portion was labeled "Temp US-6."

Notice:

If there are any pictures shot in Indiana with the old Indiana 6 sign on them, Scan and send them and I will post them NO MATTER WHERE THEY WERE TAKEN. Double that for photos with US 112S signs.

Western Terminus/Entrypoints:

Historical Western terminus for Indiana 6: Ridge at Calumet, Munster

This photo is looking west down Ridge Avenue. This was the start of Indiana 6.

This is the view looking at the intersection of Ridge Road and Calumet Avenue. At the time US 41 was on Calumet Avenue, and Indiana 6 would have ended at this intersection.

Historical Western entrypoint for US 6: 163rd Street at State Line Road, Hammond

many of the major roads don't meet directly at the Illinois/Indiana border in the Hammond area. Sometimes, like with this road, it's just a matter of the road turning, other places end up using State Line Road to transfer their traffic to other roads.

Present Western entrypoint for US 6: Illinois State Line, northernmost Munster

This is looking eastward over US 6, I-80, I-94, former I-90, former I-294 (originally I-94 was on the Toll Road and 294 was planned to meet with I-94 at present-day Exit 15) as it enters into Indiana. Also, this was the starting point for Indiana 420 (go there for THAT story).
